The Far Academy

Rom News

Around 18 months ago we came across the Far Academy and were blown away by their program and setup. We knew we wanted to work with them but couldn’t think of how we could bring this about.

Cut to 2018 and with the help of Heritage lottery Funding we’ve managed to get them onboard with our Rom Jam in July.

They were stoked to be involved…

“The Social and Economic benefits that Rom skatepark and The FAR Academy provide are intrinsically connected. As Community focused organisations, we provide a safe and challenging place for skaters of all levels to develop whilst helping get kids “off the streets” and into a safe and creative environment.

Rom skatepark has been a wonder to skaters and non-skaters alike. Visitors and spectators marvel at the athleticism and imaginations of the skaters. Skateparks are social space that nurture certain types of young people’s behaviour; they are not ‘unregulated’, ‘lawless’ or ‘chaotic.’ There are always models of behaviour – waiting in line, or applauding skill – that brings users together; Rom skatepark is a prime example of this, it is a place that both require and teach mutual respect, discipline and togetherness, through a shared appreciation of mutually beneficial norms.

This HLF project application for a film and exhibition exploring the history, status and current social significance of Rom, will be of a huge benefit for the local and wider communities. With HLF project funding, Rom skatepark can continue to be a place for changing lives and supporting future generations.”

About The Far Academy

The FAR Academy provides an alternative teaching style, engaging students through art and woodwork with its bespoke syllabus designing and building skateboards.

“We are the UK’s first and only professional skateboard and longboard deck building and design academy.

Since its inception in 2009, The FAR Academy has a strong commitment to foster lasting improvements in society, with an emphasis on supporting and empowering youth throughout the UK. In 2014 a base for the Academy was established in Canterbury, Kent.

Alongside The FAR Academy we also run The FAR Skateboard Company, a skateboard company that is 100% owned by skaters for skaters, with all profits going back to the local skate community.”
