The Rom built in 1978 to the designs of Adrian Rolt/G-force, and as of 11th Sep 2014 is now a Grade II listed site. It was agreed to be the best, and most completely preserved, of a small number of purpose-built skateparks to survive from the early years of British skateboarding.

The Rom was closely based on Californian skateparks. It takes up 8,000 sq m next to the River Rom.

It has a series of bowls like the Pool, the Moguls and the Performance Bowl, based on the “vertibowl” at Paramount skatepark.

It is a slice of California cool in Hornchurch, east of London, a concrete mecca for skaters and BMX-ers, and it is the first skatepark anywhere in Europe to be listed.
